It is the photographer's job to make the subject look good...
The best portraits I've taken have been without the knowledge of my subject. I'll be talking to them casually and suddenly snap the camera just as a laugh is being released or a certain look in the eye is revealed. It is when the subject is the most comfortable or when they let their guard down that they reveal their true side. When they're not concerned about how they look but are just acting naturally. It isn't the subject's job to look good, it is the photographer's job to make them look good. And only we know what they look like from the other side of the camera.
