A Portrait of Loneliness...

...isn't always as it appears.

Loneliness can be a beautiful thing. I do not believe it is something to fear. When else are things completely silent and completely connected? Of course, with loneliness may come sadness or confusion, but these are not negative emotions. Everything we feel and experience helps us grow.

I say these things because I have felt alone most of my life. I have grown accustomed to solitude. I have even enjoyed long walks with nothing but my own thoughts to comfort me. I sit completely alone in the park, at the beach, in a theater, never being noticed. Am I made of stone that I feel nothing wrong with being alone?

This perhaps, is why I am so drawn to these solitary figures that simply stand in place, surrounded by silence. They are passed by everyday without so much as a glance or appreciation of their presence.

Being alone is not hurtful, but never being noticed is hurtful.

Never being appreciated for the wonderful things you bring into this world, the beauty you give, the purpose for which you stand. Like each stone angel I look at, study and photograph, I feel I am taking a picture not of a gravestone, but of myself: a figure who is always being passed by and never seen for her inner beauty. The beauty that no one takes the time to see. All that is seen is the outside purpose and never the HIDDEN BEAUTY.

To me the most beautiful things are never noticed or are hidden from the world.

Perhaps we should start looking closer to discover the HIDDEN BEAUTY in all things.
